Since 2003 we have been affiliated with Princeton Watches of Newbury, Ohio, a top-service authorized dealer of watches from many name brands. Every year they add new models since many of the companies add and subtract items from their catalogs on an annual or seasonal basis depending on customer demand and current trends.

From 2003 until 2011 I also sold watches and clocks through Amazon.com as a direct affiliate. Around 2004 Jules Jurgensen pocket watches were popular and I sold a lot of those through Goldspeed. I'm pleased to see Gotham Watch Company's entrance into the market in 2011.

I find pocket watches to be a convenient alternative to wristwatches. I don't wear watches around my wrist because I don't like the feeling of it and the abrasion against the skin, especially with certain kinds of metal wristwatches. Back in the old days, people would carry pocket watches in a pocket in their jacket and bring them along with them to train terminals and various destinations.

A brief history: Pocket watches were introduced in Europe in the last quarter of the 17th century but, as Carol Prisant and Chris Jussel point out on page 195 of their 1999 book Antiques Roadshow Primer: The Introductory Guide to Antiques and Collectibles from the Most-Watched Series on PBS, the earliest pocket watches "were actually jewelry more than they were precision movements: the movements kept very poor time." Eventually, quality pocket watches arrived on the scene in places like Switzerland and England. The first American pocket watch was made in 1809. Osaka Watch Company and Japan Pocket Watch Company made watches in Japan starting at the dawn of the 20th century.

Famous vintage (19th-20th century) pocket watch brands at the luxury level include Patek Philippe (Geneva, Switzerland) and Cartier (Paris, France). Old railroad pocket watch brands include Waltham and Elgin.

Soldiers, pilots, and officers engaged in World War I (1914-1918), however, preferred wristwatches to pocket watches, and soon sales trends among the general public also favored wristwatches. The next three decades saw continued sales declines. Rayner Hesse wrote on page 197 of Jewelrymaking Through History: An Encyclopedia: "Following World War II, their production was minimal. Interesting enough, the same fashion trend that made pocket watches so popular was also their ultimate undoing: The waistcoat went out of fashion after 1945." The early 21st century saw a resurgence in the manufacture and sale of brand new pocket watches with popular, affordable brands including Seiko, Swiss Army, Jules Jurgensen, Fossil, Charles-Hubert Paris, Euro Geneve, Skagen, Invicta, Bulova, and Croton. South Dakota Gold Company manufactured pocket watches in the United States from American parts with Japanese quartz movement. The variety of watch designs was refreshing: eagles, horses, deer, fly fishing, trucking, railroad steam engine trains, military insignia, and more. Celtic-styled pocket watches were manufactured in Ireland by Rovada. Something for everyone.
