Chronograph Watches from Citizen, Seiko, Invicta, Swiss Army, Orvis, and other fine brands

Many of these chronographs come new with warranty, manual, and box.

The word chronograph emerged in the second half of the 19th century and was so named by combining the Greek words chronos (time) and graphein (writing).

The 1914 edition of the New International Encyclopedia tells us on page 297 they were useful for keeping time at horse races due to their ability to "measure intervals of time down to fifths of a second". Reyne Haines's Warman's Watches Field Guide (2011) explains on page 39 that pilots needed chronographs during World War I and that Breitling was the brand pilots of that time preferred. Pilots' demand for Breitling's flight chronographs continued during World War II. Page 383 of the 1897 edition of the Sears, Roebuck & Co. catalog sold chronographs to the general public, suggesting "While they are indispensable for timing horses, bicycle races, foot races, etc., there is no watch that is more interesting and useful as a regular pocket timepiece than a Chronograph. Thousands of people carry them who have no desire to time race horses."

Now in the 21st century, chronographs are often preferable to other kinds of watches due to their stylishness and increased complexity compared to standard watches. Torque magazine's Tony Tan remarked in the November 2008 issue that "their inherently sportier designs attract the outdoorsy watch enthusiast." (page 109) National Geographic's line of chronographs was a perfect example.
